Example:
16"x20" 2 subject painting:
$250.00 + $75.00 = $325.00
16"x20" 3 subject painting:
$250.00 + $75 + $75 = $400.00

How in the world did you come up with THAT price?!
When it comes to fine art, pricing can regularly be the uncomfortable side of the process, for the client as well as the artist. I want to explain the equation that I find to be the fairest and most objective for all. There are several ways that artists price their work. Each way has its own merit, but I want to try to strike a balance with each person that is involved in the process: the client that wants a smaller size painting, the client that wants a larger size painting, and the artist. My artwork is not represented by a gallery which simply means that I do not add on any gallery commission fees. Everything you pay for is itemized below and is priced wholesale...nothing is hidden.
I price my paintings by the linear inch. Let me illustrate it simply:
Step 1: add height + width to get total for linear inches:
11 + 14= 25

Step 2: take the total and multiply by the artist's price per linear inch:
25 x $6.00= $150.00
​
Step 3: add the cost of all the consumable supplies:
$150.00 + $25.00= $175.00

Shipping
Shipping cost can be quite subjective since it's based on weight and size. I generally check out UPS, USPS, or FedEx to see who can get the package to the destination the safest and cheapest. I don't make a penny off the shipping. In fact, I always provide you with a copy of the receipt which has the total cost and the tracking number. If you can find a cheaper avenue of shipping that won't put the painting in any kind of jeopardy, please share that information with me when we reach this stage of the process.
